Gold is a rare metal that has been on quite the journey to get here. The gold that is found naturally in the Earth’s crust is thought to have been produced in supernova explosions and neutron star collisions long ago. As a result of these cosmic events gold was present in the dust from which our solar system was formed, and can now be extracted millions of years later through mining.
